Seonji Haejangguk: Rainy Day Remedy: Blood Curd Soup in the Neighborhood

seoulzian 2025. 7. 20. 14:28

There’s a small restaurant in our neighborhood that we stroll to now and then, especially on quiet weekends. It serves a classic Korean dish—one that's often loved by the older generation, but surprisingly embraced by quite a few younger people, too.

Last weekend, it was drizzling softly. Perfect weather for warm, comforting food. So off we went.

As always, it hit the spot.

I meant to take a picture of the soup before we dug in—but here’s what was left before I remembered to take out my phone.

What’s in the bowl?
Tender ox blood curd (called seonji), greens (ugeoji), bean sprouts, and rice—swimming in a rich, savory broth. It's earthy, nourishing, and oddly addictive.

Here’s a closer look.

Funny thing is, I love seonji, but my husband can’t bring himself to eat it.
“It’s literally coagulated cow’s blood!” he says, horrified.
Fair enough. But honestly? It’s delicious.

The sidekick: chili pepper & doenjang
With dishes like this, you always get fresh green chilies and a dollop of doenjang (fermented soybean paste) on the side.

Take a bite of the fiery pepper mid-soup, and suddenly you’re sweating—your taste buds on high alert.

Dip it lightly in the paste for an extra salty punch.
But be warned: it’s very spicy. Handle with care.

Simple, humble, and deeply Korean—seonji haejangguk isn’t for everyone, but it just might surprise you.
