👧 Shim Cheong (심청전)
📖 Full Story (줄거리)
▶ English Storyline (영어 줄거리)
Once upon a time, there lived a poor blind man named Shim Bong-sa and his kind daughter, Shim Cheong. They lived a very humble life, and Cheong worked hard to care for her father. One day, she heard that if someone offered 300 sacks of rice to the Buddha, her father might regain his sight.
Determined to help, Shim Cheong looked for a way to offer that rice. She met sailors preparing to sacrifice a maiden to the sea god in exchange for calm seas. In return, the sailors promised to give 300 sacks of rice to a temple. Shim Cheong bravely volunteered.
The sailors kept their promise, and Shim Cheong was thrown into the sea. However, instead of dying, she was saved by the Sea King and taken to the Dragon Palace under the sea. There, she lived peacefully for a while. Moved by her deep devotion, the Sea King returned her to the human world—inside a lotus blossom that floated to the surface.
The lotus was found by a king, who opened it and saw the beautiful girl inside. He married her, making her queen. Eventually, a ceremony was held for blind people across the country. Among them was Shim Bong-sa. When he came near Shim Cheong, his eyes opened, and he could see his daughter again.
Reunited at last, they lived happily together in the royal palace.

The lotus flower (연꽃) is a powerful symbol in Buddhism and East Asian culture. It grows in muddy water but blooms in beauty and purity, symbolizing spiritual awakening, rebirth, and enlightenment.
In Buddhism, it is said that the Buddha himself emerged from a lotus, and many temples display lotus patterns in their architecture and paintings.
In Shim Cheong, the fact that she returns to the human world inside a lotus reflects her spiritual purity and the divine reward for her sacrifice.
