Long ago in Korea, a nobleman had two beautiful daughters named Janghwa (“Rose Flower”) and Hongryeon (“Red Lotus”). Their mother passed away when they were young, and their father remarried a woman named Heo, who had a harsh temper and later gave birth to three sons. As soon as her own sons were born, the stepmother began to abuse Janghwa and Hongryeon, seeing them as threats to her sons’ future.
When Janghwa was engaged to be married, the stepmother wanted to reduce expenses and plotted to kill her. She placed rat fur in Janghwa’s bedding and claimed the girl had committed a shameful act and aborted a child. She tricked the father into believing this and ordered her son Jangsoe to push Janghwa into a pond at night.
As he tried to kill her, a tiger appeared, biting off Jangsoe’s ears and limbs. Though Janghwa died, the truth remained hidden. Later, Hongryeon, devastated by the abuse and grief, also threw herself into the same pond.
After their deaths, strange cries echoed from the pond day and night. Magistrates who came to the village either died or ran away. Finally, a righteous man named Jeong Dong-woo volunteered to take the post. That night, the spirits of Janghwa and Hongryeon appeared in his dream and told him the truth about their deaths.
The next day, Jeong questioned the family, but the father and stepmother lied. They even presented fake evidence of Janghwa’s “abortion.” That night, the girls appeared again and told Jeong to cut open the fake fetus. The next day, he did—and found rat droppings inside.
Outraged, Jeong had the stepmother executed, Jangsoe hanged, and the father warned. He buried the sisters properly and built a stone memorial. That night, the sisters came to him in a dream, thanking him and promising he would rise in rank. Indeed, Jeong later became a high official.
In some versions, the sisters are reborn through their father’s third wife, who dreamed of receiving two lotus flowers. The twins, named again Janghwa and Hongryeon, grow up happily and marry twin sons of a wealthy family, living peaceful and blessed lives.

옛날 옛적에, 장화와 홍련이라는 두 자매가 있었습니다. 어머니를 일찍 여읜 뒤, 아버지는 허씨라는 새어머니와 재혼했습니다. 허씨는 성격이 고약했으며, 자신의 아들 세 명이 태어나자 전처의 자식인 장화와 홍련을 학대하기 시작했습니다.
장화가 혼인을 앞두자, 허씨는 지참금이 아깝다며 장화를 죽일 계획을 세웠습니다. 쥐를 잡아 털을 장화의 이불에 넣고, 그걸 꺼내어 장화가 부정을 저질러 낙태했다며 아버지를 속였습니다. 그리고 아들 장쇠를 시켜 장화를 못에 밀어 넣어 죽이게 했습니다.
그 순간, 호랑이가 나타나 장쇠의 귀와 팔, 다리를 물어갔습니다. 장화는 결국 죽고, 이를 안 홍련도 슬픔과 고통 속에 스스로 목숨을 끊고 말았습니다.
이후로 그 못에서는 밤낮으로 울음소리가 났고, 마을 사람들은 두 자매의 원혼이 떠돌고 있다고 믿었습니다. 새로 부임한 정동우 부사는 이 이야기를 듣고 밤에 제사를 지냈고, 꿈에 나타난 자매로부터 진실을 듣게 됩니다.
다음 날, 정동우는 좌수 부부를 문초했지만, 그들은 끝까지 거짓말을 합니다. 밤에 다시 나타난 자매는 “증거물의 배를 갈라보라”고 알려주었고, 다음 날 열어보니 쥐똥이 나왔습니다.
이에 정동우는 계모 허씨를 능지처참, 장쇠는 교수형, 좌수는 훈방하고, 장화와 홍련의 시신을 건져 묘를 세워 위로했습니다. 자매는 꿈에서 감사를 전하며 “앞으로 높은 벼슬에 오를 것”이라고 말했고, 실제로 정동우는 통제사가 되었다고 합니다.
어떤 이야기에서는, 두 자매가 연꽃을 받는 태몽을 꾼 새 어머니를 통해 쌍둥이로 환생하여 부유한 가정에서 행복하게 살았다고 전해집니다.
