Long ago, there lived a poor but honest woodcutter in the deep mountains. One day, while chopping wood, he accidentally dropped his iron axe into a pond. Saddened and worried, he sat by the water, unsure of what to do.
Suddenly, a mountain spirit (Sansinryeong) appeared from the pond, holding a golden axe.
“Is this golden axe yours?” he asked.
The woodcutter shook his head.
“No, that’s not mine. I lost an iron axe.”
The spirit disappeared into the water, then rose again with a silver axe.
“Then, is this silver axe yours?”
“No, that’s not mine either,” replied the woodcutter.
Finally, the spirit emerged once more, this time with a plain iron axe.
“Is this your axe?”
“Yes! That’s my axe!” said the woodcutter with joy.
Moved by the man’s honesty, the mountain spirit gave him all three axes — gold, silver, and iron — as a reward.
Hearing this story, a greedy woodcutter tried to copy him. He purposely dropped his axe into the pond and waited. When the mountain spirit appeared with a golden axe, he lied and claimed it was his.
But the spirit, angered by his dishonesty, disappeared without giving him anything.
This tale teaches that honesty is rewarded, while greed and lies lead to punishment — a timeless moral that still rings true today.
▶ Korean Storyline (한국어 줄거리)
옛날 옛적에 깊은 산골에 가난하지만 마음씨 착하고 정직한 나무꾼이 살고 있었습니다. 하루는 산에서 나무를 하던 중, 도끼를 휘두르다가 실수로 연못에 빠뜨리고 말았어요. 나무꾼은 당황하며 연못가에 앉아 속상해하고 있었지요.
그때 갑자기 연못에서 산신령이 모습을 드러냅니다. 하얀 수염을 가진 산신령은 반짝이는 금도끼를 들고 올라와 말합니다.
“얘야, 이 금도끼가 네 도끼냐?”
나무꾼은 고개를 저으며 정직하게 대답합니다.
“아닙니다. 제 도끼는 쇠도끼입니다.”
잠시 뒤, 산신령은 다시 나타나 이번엔 은도끼를 들고 묻습니다.
“그럼 이 은도끼가 네 도끼냐?”
“아닙니다. 그것도 제 것이 아닙니다.”
마지막으로 산신령은 낡고 평범한 쇠도끼를 들고 다시 나타나 묻습니다.
“이 쇠도끼가 네 도끼냐?”
나무꾼은 반가운 마음으로 대답합니다.
“네! 바로 그 도끼가 제 도끼입니다!”
산신령은 나무꾼의 정직함에 감동하며, 그에게 세 개의 도끼 – 금도끼, 은도끼, 쇠도끼를 모두 선물로 줍니다.
이 소문을 들은 욕심 많은 다른 나무꾼은 일부러 도끼를 연못에 빠뜨리고 산신령이 나타나기를 기다립니다. 그에게도 똑같이 산신령이 금도끼를 들고 나타나 묻지만, 그는 거짓말로 “그게 제 도끼입니다!”라고 말하지요. 그러자 산신령은 화를 내며 아무 도끼도 주지 않고 사라져버립니다.
이 이야기는 정직한 마음은 보상을 받고, 거짓과 욕심은 벌을 받는다는 중요한 교훈을 우리에게 전해줍니다.
