Long ago, a couple who had three sons longed for a daughter. They prayed day and night for a baby girl. Watching from afar, a fox spirit decided to be born as their long-awaited daughter. When the girl was born, the whole family was overjoyed, and the fox-in-disguise quickly became the apple of their eye.
Years passed, and strange things started happening—livestock in the house began dying mysteriously. The father asked each son to keep watch during the night. The eldest and second sons failed to stay awake. But the youngest son managed to stay up and saw something shocking: his beloved sister turned somersaults and transformed into a fox, then ripped out the cow’s liver and devoured it.
The next day, the youngest son told his parents the truth. But instead of believing him, they accused him of being jealous and threw him out of the house. Wandering the land, he saved a turtle—who revealed herself to be the daughter of the Dragon King. She took him to the underwater palace, and the two married happily.
One day, longing for his family overcame him. Though his wife was hesitant, she gave him three magical bottles—a yellow, a blue, and a red one—and told him to use them only in dire situations. When he returned to his homeland, he found it ruined. His sister greeted him warmly and offered to cook for him. But something felt wrong. Her eyes gleamed strangely, and her smile felt chilling.
Realizing the danger, he tried to escape, but she chased after him—shouting eerily, “Brother for one meal! Horse for one meal!”
He ran and threw the yellow bottle, which turned into a field of thorny brambles.
Still she came. He threw the blue bottle, and a wide river appeared.
Yet she crossed it.
At last, he hurled the red bottle, and a raging fire rose up and engulfed the fox sister.
She let out a final shriek and perished in the flames.
The young man buried her respectfully, tended his family’s graves, and returned to the Dragon Palace, where he lived happily ever after.

그러나 세월이 흐르면서 집안의 가축들이 하나둘 죽기 시작했어요. 아버지는 큰아들부터 밤에 지키게 했지만, 모두 잠들고 말았죠. 마지막으로 막내아들이 밤을 새워 지켜보는데, 누나가 재주를 넘으며 여우로 변신하더니 소의 간을 꺼내 먹는 모습을 보았어요.
막내아들은 아침에 사실대로 말했지만, 가족들은 그를 시기 질투하는 거짓말쟁이로 몰아내고 쫓아냈습니다. 방황하던 그는 자라를 구해줬고, 알고 보니 자라는 용왕의 딸이었어요. 둘은 결혼해 용궁에서 행복하게 살았죠.
하지만 가족이 그리워진 그는 육지에 다녀오고 싶다고 했고, 아내는 걱정하며 세 개의 병—노란 병, 파란 병, 빨간 병—을 건네며 위급할 때만 쓰라고 했어요. 오랜만에 찾은 집은 폐허가 되어 있었고, 여우 누이는 반갑게 그를 맞으며 밥을 해주겠다고 했죠. 그러나 그는 무언가 섬뜩한 기운을 느꼈고, 도망치려 했지만 들키고 말았어요.
여우 누이는 “오라비 한 끼, 말 한 끼!”라고 외치며 달려들었고, 그는 황급히 노란 병을 던졌어요. 그러자 가시덤불이 자라나 그녀를 막았죠.
하지만 그녀는 뚫고 왔어요.
그는 파란 병을 던졌고, 큰 강물이 생겼지만 그녀는 건넜어요.
마지막으로 빨간 병을 던지자 거센 불길이 솟구쳐 여우 누이를 삼켰고, 그녀는 비명을 지르며 죽고 말았어요.
그는 여우 누이를 정성스럽게 장사지내고, 부모님과 형들의 묘도 돌보며 다시 용궁으로 돌아가 아내와 함께 오래오래 행복하게 살았답니다.
