📖 Full Story (줄거리)

Once upon a time, an old fisherman and his wife lived peacefully with their dog and cat. One day, the grandfather caught a big carp while fishing in the river. But the carp shed tears, so the kind grandfather let it go.
The carp was actually the son of the Dragon King, and in return for his kindness, he gave the old man a magical marble that could grant wishes.
Thanks to the marble, rice, clothes, and even a new house appeared. The old couple became rich and lived comfortably. However, one day, a jealous woman from the neighboring village came by. She questioned them about their sudden fortune and secretly stole the marble.
As soon as the marble disappeared, so did everything else. The house, food, and clothes all returned to their poor state. The dog and the cat set out to find the marble. The dog carried the cat across the river, and they sneaked into the thief’s house. With help from some mice, they successfully found the marble.
On the way home, the cat rode on the dog’s back, holding the marble in its mouth. But when the dog asked, “Are you holding it well?” the cat tried to answer and dropped the marble into the water. Luckily, the cat caught a fish, and inside the fish’s belly was the marble.
The cat brought the marble back home. The old couple was overjoyed. In the end, the cat was rewarded for retrieving the marble and allowed to live inside the house, while the dog stayed outside in the yard. That’s why, in old Korean homes, cats were kept indoors and dogs lived outside.
▶ Korean Storyline (한국어 줄거리)
옛날 옛날에 어부 할아버지와 할머니는 개, 고양이와 함께 사이좋게 살았어요. 어느 날 강에 낚시를 갔다가 큰 잉어를 잡았는데, 잉어가 눈물을 흘려서 착한 할아버지가 놓아주었지요. 그 잉어는 사실 용왕의 아들이었고, 감사의 뜻으로 소원을 들어주는 신기한 구슬을 선물했어요.
구슬 덕분에 쌀도 옷도 집도 모두 생겨 할아버지네는 부자가 되었어요. 그런데 어느 날, 이웃 마을에 사는 할머니가 갑자기 찾아왔어요. 노부부가 갑자기 부자가 된 걸 시샘해서 이것저것 캐묻더니, 몰래 구슬을 훔쳐갔어요. 구슬이 사라지자 모든 것이 사라졌어요. 집도, 음식도, 옷도 다 원래대로 돌아갔지요.
개와 고양이는 다시 구슬을 찾기 위해 길을 나섰어요. 개가 고양이를 업고 강을 건너고, 도둑의 집에 몰래 들어가 쥐들을 불러 구슬을 찾는 데 성공했어요. 집으로 돌아오는 길, 고양이는 개 등 위에 올라타 입에 구슬을 물고 있었는데, 개가 “구슬 잘 물고 있니?”라고 묻자 대답하려다가 구슬을 물속에 빠뜨리고 말았어요.
다행히도 고양이가 물고기를 잡아 그 배를 가르자, 그 안에서 구슬이 나왔어요. 고양이는 구슬을 들고 집으로 돌아왔고, 할머니와 할아버지는 아주 기뻐했어요. 결국 고양이는 구슬을 찾아온 공을 인정받아 집 안에서 지내게 되었고, 개는 마당에서 지내게 되었다는 이야기가 전해진답니다.

Even small acts of kindness can lead to great rewards, but true success comes when friends work together with care, trust, and understanding.
